Ibuprofen

Step 1 of up to 4

Ibuprofen is the alpha-aryl propionic acid every NSAID class wants you to know. Industrially it's the BHC three-step route from isobutylbenzene: Friedel-Crafts acetylation, hydrogenation of the ketone, then catalytic carbonylation to swap the OH for the carboxylic acid. Try walking it back: which bond is the easiest to cut on the way out?
