Methyl salicylate

Step 1 of up to 2

Methyl salicylate is the wintergreen smell. One step from salicylic acid: heat with methanol and a drop of sulfuric acid, and the carboxylic acid esterifies. The molecule has two -OH groups, but only the carboxylic acid one reacts under Fischer conditions; the phenol just sits there. That chemoselectivity is the whole lesson here.
